BIOGRAPHY

Brice Brown has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Artnews, National Public Radio, and The Village Voice, among others. He has held residencies at Yaddo, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and the Vermont Studio Center, and has been a visiting artist/lecturer at Pratt Institute, Bucknell University, Dartmouth College, Carnegie Mellon University, Williams College, and Drew University. His work in public collections includes the International Collage Center at Mount Holyoke College, Speed Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Swope Art Museum, and Yale University. Brown has curated numerous exhibitions, and has founded Milton Art Bank (MAB), an experimental art space located in a converted bank building. He has also launched two artist-run art journals, The Sienese Shredder (2006-2010), and Tether (2014-2019). As a writer, Brown was a regular art critic for the New York Sun newspaper (2006-2009), and for City Arts newspaper (2009-2010), and has also contributed essays for exhibition catalogues. He received a BA from Dartmouth College and an MFA from Pratt Institute, and also studied at the Chautauqua School of Art.

Brown works across mediums and genres and his artistic practice has been described as “somewhere between theory and practice. It materializes concepts, makes ideas and multiplies variations of meaning as it enfolds ‘theory’ with/in ‘practice’ in a vital, corporeal exchange with bodies in the world. The form of Brown’s work, then, is the engagement of the viewer with the work rather than the works themselves as disembodied objects. His work may point to a much more phenomenological understanding of the world in which the identity of objects is deeply intertwined with those who view them” (Alpesh Kantilal Patel, catalog essay for HOMUNCULUS).

Winter Holiday Printmaking Mini Workshops, Nov 12 & 19!

HOLIDAY THEMED PRINTMAKING via ZOOM (2 part workshop)
November 12 & 19 (Thursdays)
Click here to choose 1-4 pm OR
Click here to choose 6-9 pm

Using the easy to learn and “accessible for all” gelli plate printmaking technique you will be carefully guided through a number of methods of making holiday themed cards or small artworks suitable for gifting in time for the winter holidays. Anyone located within the State College area can pick up a ‘Student Tool Kit” including a gelli plate and brayer. You will need to provide your own papers and acrylic paints and return the tool kit after the course is finished. If you are located outside of State College you are welcome to join but you will need to provide your own gelli plate and brayer. A detailed list of texture making materials and other items you will need – but probably already have – will be sent out in good time before the first lesson. Note: All denominations and beliefs are welcome.

Downtown Holiday Art Walk Anyone?

Several Centre County art organizations are considering a Holiday Art Walk Market in Downtown State College over the weekends of November 27-29 and December 3-6, 2020.

The juried event would be hosted in several vacant storefronts throughout Downtown State College. Artists would be assigned to a location along with 2-3 other artists. Each location would be limited to 25 walk-in guests at a time and mask-wearing would be required of all guests per Borough ordinances.

Artists would need to be on site, designate a sales representative, or make arrangements with another artist to take sales on their behalf for the entirety of the Walk. While details are still forthcoming, we are hopeful that this event would assist both local artists and downtown retailers during this unusual holiday season.

The event would be promoted by several local art organizations along with the Downtown State College Improvement District.

Please take a moment to let us know if you would be interested/able to sell your work at this potential event by completing this quick survey ASAP!

OR if don’t have a Google account PLEASE EMAIL Amy Frank at The Makery at hello@themakerypa.com.

Thank you!

Eric Markievich’s Show at the BAM

“Recycled Illusions on the Path to Singularity” — artist Eric Markievich

This body of work is inspired by contemplations on cycles of life, the interplay of spiritual and material realms, and the rise and fall of the machines. All portrayed in a fun parody like manner, of course. Perhaps a Sci-Fi show of sorts, however, by all means deep philosophical and existential questions abound.
