Bookbinding: 4 Simple Techniques – Online – evening session
Thursdays, 6–9pm
10/15–11/5
with Ingrid Booz Morejohn
There is something special about gathering loose pieces of paper into bound form, finishing them with a beautiful cover and holding the result in the hand that made it. Do you have a pile of gelli plate prints you don’t know what to do with? Printed or painted art work on paper? Journal pages or personal writings? Collaged scrapbook pages? Travel ephemera? Beautiful marbled or antique papers? A collection of recycled papers or funky packaging that you would love to upcycle or repurpose? Or would you just like to make a blank book that you can fill later? This class is a perfect continuation to the 4-week gelli plate printmaking class, but it is also perfect as a beginner’s introduction to bookbinding. You will learn four basic but useful and beautiful techniques:
Lesson 1: Lotus flower fold or “squash” book
Lesson 2: Saddle or pamphlet stitch book
Lesson 3: Accordion or concertina book
Lesson 4: Japanese stab bound book
Required Supplies
Each student will need to purchase a Basic Bookbinding Kit, PVA glue, glue stick and various papers. Cost depends on how you want to build your book and what tools you might already have: $20-$50. Once you have registered you will be sent a detailed list of what you need for each class.
