Bookbinding Workshop: Expandable Journal/Sketchbook

This is a 4-day, 2-weekend workshop (February 4–5 and February 11–12) in which students will create a pamphlet stitch book with folded accordion spine and hard cover. Using printed and unprinted papers, students will create a personalized handbound book with pamphlet stitching. You will learn how to make pockets, folded inserts, and other treats to include in your book. In class, you will have time to construct and collage papers. When finished, your book will be a thick personalized journal, sketchbook, memory book, or “junk journal.”
This book structure is easily personalized and designed according to your own desires. The accordion spine structure can expand, allowing you to add materials as you go. Pamphlet stitch is a versatile binding method—once learned, you can easily adapt it to multiple sizes and looks—you will be shown numerous examples of how you can work with this binding structure. If there is time, you will be able to make more than one book.
Materials fee payable to the teacher first lesson: $15. This includes 2 book boards, 2 cover papers, 1 accordion spine paper, 2 end papers, materials for spine straps and closures, a quantity of blank papers, a selection of paper ephemera, binding thread, all tools, glues and more. You will have access to gelli plates and acrylic paint to modify or decorate your papers. We will have one in-class sewing machine.
**It is encouraged that each student brings their own stash of found and printed papers and personal ephemera to individualize their book.
The workshop fee is $140 for Art Alliance members ($170 non-members) plus $15 materials fee payable to the instructor.
All workshops will practice COVID-19 safety protocols which include: small classes to allow for social distancing, hand sanitizer on the premises, students will wipe down their worktables and stools at the end of class, and masks are required regardless of vaccination status. In the event a workshop is cancelled, students may choose a refund or credit toward future classes.
