Discover how to see beyond the obvious within the landscape, and use expressive color to capture the essence of mood and atmosphere in sky and more. Whether you work in pastel, oil, watercolor, or acrylic, you will learn to see the depth of color and create a unique and personally expressive painting in this relaxed and upbeat studio to plein air experience.

Skilled in all mediums, Susan is a seasoned studio and plein air painter who will lead you to your personal color expression in the medium of your choice. Her goal is to connect to you and inspire creativeness each day.

Every day we will meet at Rhoneymeade Arboretum & Sculpture Garden Studio, an exceptional location with extensive options for subjects, ranging from old unique trees, gardens, historic structures, fields, and mountain vistas with Central PA skies.

The first day you will learn plein air tips and tricks along with the basics of preparing for a fun and successful outdoor painting experience. Susan will also share a short inspirational demonstration along with a “Hands-on” exploring color and how to use it in the landscape.

Each morning will begin in the Rhoneymeade Studio or nearby shade trees with a short demo focusing on methods that will aid in color expression and prepare you for plein air set-ups. Weather providing we will be outside with some demonstrations on location.

The use of underpainting and color mixing will be explored in both pastel and oil. Watercolor and acrylics will often support the early stages of expression. “Thumbnail Sketches” and their importance in supporting strong compositions and values within color will help you “Target Focus” on what inspires you in the landscape. There will be personal time at your easel following the morning demo, and support given at each easel throughout each day.
